Responsible for leading and coordinating the activities of the Mechanical Design Engineering, Airworthiness and Certification teams.

Responsible for supporting all mechanical engineering design and qualification and certification efforts for a complex project(s), keeping to schedule and any defined budget.

Supporting role to the Engineering Lead for the review of customer specifications and requirements and assist project team to develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable.

Responsible for ensuring design compliance with all project requirements.

Support the team to coordinate test laboratories as necessary to experimentally prove new product developments, and support design reviews.

Support the transition of new products into production.

Maintain comprehensive engineering notes, models, records, calculations, and analyses that demonstrate the progression of the product designs, and encourage team members to follow your example.

Engage in cost estimates for prototype and production parts, support building a business case in support of product development activities.

Evaluate, define and resolve design and manufacturing problems.

Represent the company at Technical Exhibitions and Symposia.

Take responsibility for the management of requirements verification throughout project execution to successfully demonstrate compliance for a Design Declaration of Performance (DDP).

Mentoring others to develop products in accordance with approved Safety Engineering Assurance & Certification practices.

Checking & Approving of Safety documentation; Hazard Log and Safety Assessment Reports in line with ALARP principles and best practice arrangements according to the relevant regulatory requirements.

Travel (both in the UK and overseas) to liaise with customers and suppliers when required and represent the company during off site technical activities.

Perform personal development appraisals for your direct reports.

Represent the Engineering Lead as required, acting in the capacity of ‘deputy’.


Demonstrate a solid understanding of Safety Engineering principles and the process of Certification of products to meet regulatory approvals pertinent to EASA and UK MoD standards.

Accountability and ownership.

Sound knowledge of material characteristics, including but not limited to; flammability of materials would be desirable.

Possess a Pro-active and a “Can-do” attitude with regards the type of tasks that may be required to be undertaken to ensure tasks are completed.

Good understanding of Loads Calculations and the use of Experimental Stress Analysis is essential.

Knowledge and familiarity of regulatory authorities.

Mechanical Fault Analysis and corrective action methods pertinent to the job role.

Proven Management experience would be a distinct advantage.

Effective communication skills.


Qualified to degree or comparable level in a Mechanical/Aeronautical engineering discipline along with proven experience in mechanical design within a regulated industry.  Chartered Engineer status is desirable, or working towards membership of a relevant Professional Institution.

Experience in Flight Equipment or general aircraft design

Completed suitable education/training of AS9100, EASA Part 21 Subpart G & J and UK MAA DAOS/DEFSTAN 0056

Familiarity with MIL-STD’s, Def-Stan, NAS, ASME and DoD procurement processes and procedures would be an advantage.

Able to demonstrate experience in the following key disciplines:

A strong understanding of systems engineering in the context of aerospace systems, equipment and the integration of equipment onto various platform types.

Knowledge and experience in material selection for structural components.

Experience of design validation.

Experience of loads calculation and validation with the ability to carry out comprehensive testing to relevant standards.

A minimum of 4 years in a Mechanical Engineering position, ideally in an aerospace EASA Part 21 G or DAOS environment.

Experience working with integrated program teams leading manufacturing development plans for aerospace products.

Experience and knowledge of the application of CAD including simulation tools.

A proven track record in team leader/management with development of junior engineers and supervising of contractors.
